Seven Year 10 & 11\u00a0students have been in Timor-Leste for the last 3 weeks of Term 3 and have experienced\u00a0immersion\u00a0in\u00a0a\u00a0climate,\u00a0culture, and standard\u00a0of living\u00a0completely different to that they are familiar with.\u00a0They will have\u00a0opportunities to share their thoughts and experiences\u00a0when they return. It may take time for\u00a0these experiences to\u00a0sink\u00a0in\u00a0so I will not\u00a0attempt\u00a0to preempt their\u00a0thoughts and feelings.\u00a0As an\u00a0adult,\u00a0who has traveled\u00a0to places with similar standards of living before,\u00a0it has been a reminder of the\u00a0discrepancy\u00a0between\u00a0developed and\u00a0developing\u00a0nations\u2019\u00a0share of\u00a0resources (globally speaking)\u00a0and all the issues that\u00a0accompany\u00a0this reality.\u00a0I shared with the students, Australian philosopher,\u00a0and proponent of \u2018effective altruism\u2019,\u00a0Peter Singers\u00a01972\u00a0thought experiment.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2018You are to imagine that you\u2019re walking past a shallow pond when you see a child struggling in the water. There is nobody else around to help. Just before you wade in, you remember that you\u2019re wearing your most expensive shoes. Unfortunately, there\u2019s no time to remove them, and they\u2019ll be ruined by the water\u2019 What do\/should you do?<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n While the answer is obvious. It becomes less obvious if you apply the idea across greater distances. Put simply, despite our capacity to save the lives of distant people in terrible situations, given our relative wealth, often we do not. <\/p>\n\n\n\n In our experience, people in Timor-Leste are generous, friendly, kind and undoubtedly tough and resilient. Students walking an hour each way to school with minimal food, carrying water and subsistence living are just some examples. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The experience has given the students plenty to consider, and we are grateful that Friends of Venilale in Mansfield and Friends of Mansfield in Timor-Leste have been willing to help make the trip possible.
