Year 9 Main Lesson have been exploring conic sections – a curve obtained at the intersection of the surface of a cone with a plane.
They have investigated four types of conic sections: the hyperbola, the parabola, circle, and the ellipse.
The students have sculpted the ‘Conic Sections’ in Terracotta clay and had a great time carving into them symbols and creative decorative patterns. Students continue their journey into the world of conic sections via remote learning. Topics of investigation and learning this week have been how to draw and plot the conic sections, specifically ellipses, and how they relate to the solar system and the orbit of planets.
