Last week it was ‘Reconciliation’ week and to acknowledge this Class Six started their new Main Lesson in Australian History. We opened the lesson by taking a look at the theme of having two ways of looking back at our History. One way, through the lens of the European “settler” and the other, through the lens of Aboriginal Australia.

More importantly, we have been looking at the accomplishments both these perspectives bring and how to link them up as one inclusive way of recognising our shared history. We learned about Reconciliation Rocks in Cook Town, where the first act of reconciliation occurred between Captain Cook and the local Guugu Yimithirr, after a dispute over turtle hunting. We have been learning many songs including “This Land is Mine” by Paul Kelly and Kev Carmody and “The Song About Captain Cook” by Peter Combe.
