Over the school holidays our rugs, after arriving in Western Australia, were gathered, sorted and connected together with some 3,500 other rugs as part of Reclaiming the Void at the WA Museum in Boorloo/Perth. People from all over came into the museum to help stitch these dots that were crafted in even further flung places into the most enormous blanket rug. This giant rug was farewelled by song to begin its journey to Ngalia tjukurrpa parna – sacred country to the North East – where it will be laid over land affected by mining.
Below are some photographs and video of this coming together to sort and place and sew under the bones of the Mammang Wooyan (Blue Whale – Noongar) in the museum.
Thanks to all the hands that wove strips around and around their wheel with care to build their class dot and be part of recreating Ngalia Elder, Dolly Walker’s painting Tuito heal country.
